  1. On Irish Owned Business in Rossendale:

"Tommy Johnson (Mary Connellys hubby) was a funeral Director and his firm was near Bacup Station I think on Newchurch Road BUT if Tommy came from Irish background I do not know. BTW all the Horan 7 girls were born and raised in Stacksteads from Irish Parents from Roscommon and Mayo Borders. Only Margaret and Winnie actually married Irish men. (Grogan and Duffy). I am wrecking my brains thinking was there other Irish owned businesses in the Valley but cannot think of any.

Connelly Bros involved John, Dez, Jim, Matt, Peter, and Father in some way. Young Matt had his own building demolishing business later on. Paddy Moran was and still is, a great friend of mine growing up. Jack Duffy was his Uncle I think. Paddy and Michaels Father DOM was a grand old chap and great friends with your granddad Jim and my dad. Dom Moran was a big man with a very soft high pitched voice. The Irish people would say refer to Dom as ‘Dom with the pale blue voice’ as they talked about him hahaha. Now was Dom a relative of yours?"

Hello, I think you may have made contact with my Mum, Margaret Nixon (née Connolly) at some point in the past. She has asked me to post on her behalf.

My Granddad was John Connolly, founder of Connolly Bros. Builders. He then pulled out of this business and left it to one of his brothers, Desmond. John then formed a separate building company: J & M Connolly (Rossendale) Limited.

In fact Tommy Johnson, who's descendants still live in Bacup to this day are in the building trade. I know that Tommy's company, although funeral directors, were also joiners and did work for Connolly Bros.

You are correct, Matt went and formed his own demolition company.
